Oh goodness, so many abbreviations. Yes. The dreaded SEO - Search Engine Optimization. Now most of us know how to get on our websites, but do we know how to get our websites found online? Of course, you can pay Google or Yelp money and get your studio website or singer website listed as "Sponsored Post" - but do you trust those "sponsored posts"? Yeah... neither do I!
Okay - so you can list your website from here to the moon, but you're going to need to tag some good and relevant topics in your SEO box if you want to be listed higher on the Google totem pole. You want to consider keywords for the ideal clients you need to find you. I would have a notebook by your desk and just jot down the things you should list as you think of them and sit down with one editing sesh later. If you want to be found by potential brides as a wedding soloist, you'll want all local wedding information to be in your SEO tag box. Funerals? Look up funeral homes and get some of that information in the box. Teaching elementary kids? Boy, you better believe "beginning music lessons" is one of your tags!
Crowd-sourcing isn't all that new, but it's still a bit intimidating for singers. At least, it is for me... We have to put on our big-kid undies and promote ourselves! It feels like gloating! How do we overcome that feeling of egocentricity and ask for help to pay for our products!
You can do one time, project based funding (with a deadline) through sites like Go Fund Me, or even Kickstarter (usually these are arts projects, like student films, but maybe for a recital?). You can also set up small one-off donations through Ko-Fi (donations costing about the same as a cup of coffee. Cute, right? Or monthly donors can contribute through Patreon, subscribing as you would with a magazine. You can offer Patreon subscribers little rewards, like "VIP access" to concerts or receptions - VIP only recordings of you singing? Get creative and make it worth your while.
Don't let money hold you back from being the performer you dream of being! You can set up online payments to get the funding you need for your projects - don't be afraid to ask! Just make sure you show your appreciation and contribute back in some meaningful way to those helping you!
It’s important to continue growing as an online presence. When you want to attract new customers, you need to stay up to date on then latest trends in online marketing.
There red are a few great business podcasts to follow. If you’re working on setting up more online work, I’d highly recommend placing promoted ads on Facebook and other social media platforms to get people onto your website.
I really like the Ellevate Podcast and Girlboss Radio's In Progress for business. Crushing Classical and The Full Voice podcasts for musical inspiration and chats with artists, Goaldigger and Women, Work and Worth (check out: Why Personal Branding is Essential for Any Carrer Path, episode from 11/12/17) when I need a boost. There’s a lot of information out there, so just give it a whirl!
